Safe and comfortable backcountry campsites are available for treks from Batopilas to Urique and on to Cerocahui or reverse. Starting in Cerocahui, hikers can descend into the Urique Canyon, resupply in Urique then continue on to Batopilas on a two-canyon trek. See the "Trail Maps" section under "Horse Packing" where we have some topographic maps of the route.

Los Alisos Campground*

A former gold mining district, Los Alisos is surrounded by steep canyon walls and has magnificent views into the Urique Canyon and of the climb to Yesca. Straddling El Camino Real, campers are welcome to help themselves to grapefruits, mangos, limes, oranges or guabas from the campground orchard. Facilities include running water, an outhouse, shaded camp sites, a central firepit with hinged grill, a fenced area for livestock, bathing holes in a nearby arroyo and a cabin, Our neighbors, Próspero and Sabina, can usually prepare basic meals at minimal cost. Mountain and elegant Trogans are frequently spotted in this birders paradise. Elevation 3000 feet.

Terrero Campground

Dramatic Sunset views of the Munerachi and Batopilas Canyons above Cerro Colorado. This campground is owned by Emilio Cervantes and his family and his family and offers camping spaces around their adobe home. Campers have a chance to visit with Emilio and his family and sample the lifestyles of a mestizo family in the Sierra tarahumara. Facilities include running water, a nearby field for horses, an outhouse is in the planning.

Naranjo Campground

Meleton Mancinas and his family have built this campground in a fruit orchard alongside their adobe home. The friendly family offers basic meals to campers and welcomes visitors into their kitchen and home. A delight is sitting with them on their porch at sunset when Lilac-crowned parrots frequently fly over their home. Facilities include running water, fresh fruits, an outhouse. Elevation 3500 feet.

Cerocahui Campground*

Accessible by vehicle, the Cerocahui Campground is nestled alongside Arroyo del Ranchito beneath towering cliffs dominated the famous Yogi Bear formation. An excellent place to start your adventure, this campground offers a central firepit with hinged grill, availability of meals and amenities at the nearby Hotel Paraiso del Oso. Swimming in warm months, nearby archaeological sites, guided tours, horse rentals, complete trip planning, topographical maps, an outhouse and chance for hot showers. Elevation 5400 feet.

San Isidro Campground*

Nestled in a high Tarahumara Valley is the San Isidro Campground and Cabin. It is reached by a two- hour steep hike from the Cerocahui Campground and is an ideal place to relax or hang out for a while. There is no host at this campground but several Tarahumara families live nearby. The campground is used primarily by groups from the Rancho del Oso and by people looking for a place to get away from things. Pack stock is available for people wanting to stay for longer periods at the campground or in a comfortable adobe cabin on the property. Elevation 6000 feet.
