More like a mountain lodge, the Paraiso del Oso is the destination of choice for savvy travelers visiting the Copper Canyon. Privately owned and operated, the Paraiso del Oso reflects the true charm and hospitality found only in a rural setting.

Yogi Bear Rock - note the climbers next to him
"Yogi Bear" Rock rises behind the Lodge

The Oso is in the Huetoibo valley beneath towering rock columns. The most famous column has an uncanny resemblance to Yogi Bear, complete with a derby hat as seen on the right side of this picture. Although Yogi looks small when seen from the hotel, look closely for people on the rock spire to his left. Our campground is just downhill from the hotel and borders a clear mountain stream, perfect for a cool summer dip.

Twenty-one rooms make the Oso one of the smaller hotels in the region. It is also one of the friendliest hotels where the staff strives not only to please you, but to share culture, language and experience. The Oso specializes in smaller special-interest groups and in individual travelers with a zest for life and a desire to learn. The courtyard is a good place to watch the hummingbirds, spend a little time in the sun, or catch up on some overdue time in a hammock. We offer a relaxing countryside setting free from the distractions that disrupt modern life. There are no radios, television, or telephones. However, in a concession to modern times, we have added wireless internet access in the hotel's lobby and bar in case you are traveling with a computer.

High on every traveler's priority list is plentiful hot water for showers, purified drinking water, informed guides, and tasty food. Our guest book is filled with positive comments on these items. We attempt to purchase as many of our supplies locally as practical. However, due to our remote location, the majority of our supplies are delivered to us by train or occasional truck from Cuauhtemoc.

All meals are prepared daily and served in our dining room. Under Ana Maria's directions, the kitchen staff provides a varied menu to suit all tastes. If you have any unusual dietary requirements, we will try to accommodate you. Special food is kept on hand for a variety of vegetarian dishes. A guest favorite is the outdoor cookout--when was the last time you roasted a marshmallow over a campfire?

With almost 190 bird species sighted, the Oso is a destination for birders and birding groups. Rare is the birder who does not increase the life list with additions such as the Mountain or Elegant Trogon, The Eared Quetzal (Trogon), Lilac Crowned Parrot, Military Macaw, or White-striped Wood Creeper. Hummingbird feeders regularly attract up to 11 species! Butterfly and moth enthusiasts report a number of exciting finds. This activity is only getting started here and our listing is incomplete.

Archaeological sites surround the hotel with more sites known but not unchecked. Hiking and trail riding opportunities abound. The hotel sponsors a community action program so that visitors may help give back to the community. The Oso has sponsored research projects along with medical missions and other humanitarian projects.

Homemade Pizza in the cantina
Join us at the Cantina for a drink
(and occasionally some pizza!)

At the end of your day, meet us in the cantina for a drink. Here you can get to know your fellow travelers, swap stories with the staff, and plan the next day's activities. It's also a good place to brush up on your Spanish with our staff and other languages with our other guests. Check the map located next to the gift shop - it shows we have hosted visitors from almost all parts of the world!

Our tours place special emphasis on the natural and human history of the Sierra Madre - so much so the Oso has been called on to train guides used by other companies.

Rates at the Oso are kept surprisingly low. Our prices include the 8-mile transfer to and from the train station at Bahuichivo, all meals, and a welcome cocktail. Tips are not included.

The Oso offers the widest selection of vehicle tours and hikes and trail rides of any hotel in the state of Chihuahua. We pioneered the vehicular descent to Urique now offered by other hotels. We still are the only hotel including the 400-ft-long Guadalupe suspension bridge and offering a hot lunch with friends in Urique.

We invite you to book directly with us to ensure your reservation or to contact one of our primary suppliers for a package tour which visits the Oso.
