Road Log
Tubares, Chihuahua
to
Choix, Sinaloa

This log covers the new road from Tubares to Choix. The road was constructed by the mining company at Sauzal and opened to traffic in March 2004. A bridge over the Rio Fuerte is scheduled to be functional in June 2004. As of May much work was still being done on the road, which will be top quality, gravel and seems like a miracle to people of the Sierra. This single road is changing buying habits for some people of the Sierra who now drive to Choix instead of Chihuahua or Cuauhtemoc. It is a beautiful drive with parts in high sierra and parts following alongside the Rio Fuerte. WARNING: Do not even think of stopping at the Ranchito of Chorro, it has perhaps the worst reputation in the region and justifiable so.

MILE

DESCRIPTION

0.0 Casa Colorado on the bank of the Rio Fuerte where the bridge crosses to Tubares
12.6 Realito, a former mining town. Ruins of the town church are worth visiting. It was built by the miner and tierrateniente Bernardo Garcia and dedicated to his patron saint, San Bernado in July 1901, in time for the saint's day on 20 August. Garcia once owned all the land from Realito to Descanso on the Chihuahua Pacific Railroad. People who worked on this land had to pay him rent. He was a shareholder in the famous Lluvia de Oro (Rain of Gold) mine.
16.4 Ranchito of Chorro. WARNING: Keep moving, do not stop here.
28.0 Pueblo of El Saucito on right alongside an arroyo
34.7 Small pueblo of Saucilo
35.0 "T" intersection, left is the best way to Choix but we were told that a right will also get one there, probably by passing some of the pueblos near lake Huites. A store at this intersection has cold drinks and snacks.
38.1 Small pueblo, we did not get the name.
46.6 Another pueblo whose name we missed.
47.0 Cross Road, go straight
54.7 Pass Ranchito de Islas
55.4 Paved road! Go left to Choix, right goes to the dam at Huites
