Copper Canyon by Satellite

1. Local Map:
We are updating our map information and have transferred some of it to a satellite image of Copper Canyon. Taken by NASA's Landsat 7 satellite, this image shows the greater Copper Canyon region and only hints at the expansiveness of the Sierra Madre range. The image encompasses an area of approximately 215 x 225 kilometers starting north of Creel and San Juanito, west to Basaseachi National Park, and south to Alamos, Choix, and below the Rio Fuerte and Huites Lake. This is a "false-color" image meaning it is not the same as a normal optical photograph but is synthesized from different wavelengths.

Two versions are being worked on - a browse version and a higher resolution version. The browse version (shown reduced in size in the thumbnail below) shows the route of the Chihuahua al Pacifico (Chepe) train route, major roads, and major towns. The high resolution version shows some of the back-country routes and numerous additional locations. File sizes are large - be prepared to wait if you are on a slow connection. Your browser may display the image at different scales depending on its version and the resolution of your display. Internet Explorer 6 allows you to scale the image to fit the screen size or to switch to full-scale resolution. After the image loads, IE will downsize it to the size of your screen. Place your mouse cursor in the lower-right image corner and a resizing box should appear. Set your browser for a 1:1 ratio for best viewing.

2. Google Earth:
For another perspective on our location, go to http://earth.google.com . Download and install their free viewer. Then right-click on a name below. Save the resulting "kml" data file to your disk - then double-click the filename. Google's viewer will take you to the location. The "Temporary Places" checkbox in the "Places" pane should be selected for the place-name to be displayed.

The world just became a lot smaller...
