Trekking
Home Up The Trek to Urique Hiking to Batopilas

To stand on the rim of the Canyon, knowing that you got there on your own two feet, now that’s something special. Our horse-supported treks make it even more special by eliminating the drudgery. We supply camping and cooking equipment and then transport it so you can concentrate on enjoying your trek. You bring only a sleeping bag and personal items.

Once in camp, you set up your campsite while our staff organizes the kitchen, prepares drinks, and begins cooking a gourmet meal. Over a cocktail or glass of wine, your guide chats about the area, answers questions, and points our natural features. We build the nightly campfire so all you have to do is sit around the fire and swap yarns. What a life!

Wake up to a morning cup of coffee then relax as we prepare a filling cowboy breakfast. Watch as our wranglers skillfully pack and balance loads before tying them onto pack-stock. Now you understand the term "beast of burden!" While our wranglers normally ride, it is nice to know their horses are there for you in case of a sprained ankle or other trailside incapacitation.

A break from the climb, a good lunch stop, and a panoramic view treat the hikers.

If you want to bring your own lightweight packing equipment, subject to our approval, you receive a $20 per person discount on the Urique trek and $75 on the Batopilas trek. If you wish to do the trip totally on your own without our assistance, let us know and we’ll put you in contact with a local guide who knows the trails.

Many things set us apart from other outfitters. To begin with is experience, we have backpacked and trekked through many regions of the U.S.A. from the Appalachian Trail, to the Cranberry Bog, to dry desert hikes of Utah and Arizona, up snowy peaks and, well, you get the idea. Things can happen in the wilderness so we carry extensive first aid kits and medication for both hikers and stock. We've also placed rescue litters in various communities. Food is top notch featuring such delicacies as rainbow trout, peach cobbler, arrachera (tender marinated beef), traditional discadas. Oops, did we forget to mention that evening meals come accompanied by wine, margarita, or other beverage.

Our treks run at a pace that allows you to enjoy your hike while absorbing cultural and scenic wonders that are world-class. Sure we could rush things to cut costs but that is not our way. Most people only see the Copper Canyon region one time, we want them to see it right. When you trek with us, it is comforting to know that every trip goes out with gentle stock for riding if the trail should prove a little too tough, if well-worn boots  suddenly give countless blisters, or for any other reason. When you go with us, you go with the best.

Without saying more, we hope to see you in the Sierra, contact us if you want to go on one of our treks. Or stop in and say hi if you’re just passing though, tell us enough yarns and we might even invite you to enjoy a margarita in the bar. We have been backpackers, cavers, and climbers ourselves and have "walked our talk"!

Advisory: Don’t hike without a guide! Trails are confusing with main trails sometimes leading to ranches instead of to your destination. Trails exist because of the necessities of travel rather than for recreation. There are no trail signs, waterholes are scarce and virtually nonexistent during dry months. Finally, lone hikers risk stumbling onto someone’s planting of illicit herbs or camping in questionable areas.

Our treks can be as long or short as your time & interests allow. We do horse-supported treks to Urique and Batopilas over times spanning two days to a week. Let us know what you are interested in and we'll put it together. The price list below covers our more popular local treks.
