Urique Trek The two-day trek to Urique features fantastic mountain views, cultural experiences and a descent to the very bottom of the Urique Canyon. It is a fairly simple hike with a 600-foot elevation gain the first day followed by a 3500-foot descent, all this in 6 hours of hiking. The second day features a 1500-foot descent to the bottom of the canyon on a hike that should last no more than 4 hours. During these two days trekkers pass through three different biological life zones. Accommodations before and after the trek are not included allowing trekkers to select between camping and luxury accommodations prior to departure.
Day One: Hike through the dramatic El Cajon Canyon climbing 400 meters to Pass of the Cross for lunch and a dramatic overview of the canyons below. Depart the Pass on steep mountain trails descending over a kilometer to the remote pueblo of Naranjo. Camp beneath tropical fruit trees and socialize with the Meleton Mancinas family in their adobe home. Accessible only on foot, Naranjo is surrounded by high canyon walls and retains a rural charm reminiscent of times gone by. A special Chihuahua cookout accompanied by dinner wine highlights festivities with our host family as we celebrate our first successful day on the trail (6-7 hours hiking). Day Two: Filling breakfast accompanied by tortillas hand-made by the Mancinas family. Morning visit to the rustic one-room schoolhouse where hikers can talk about their homeland and share small items they may have brought from home. A visit to the humble adobe church and social calls with a few friends ends our stay in Naranjo. Midmorning departure descending 700 meters to Urique, in the very bottom of the canyon. Founded in 1690 as a gold mining center, this friendly pueblo is now a county seat and commercial center for surrounding ranchitos. Pack trains of mules or burros and individual pack animals are a common scene on the streets. Arrive in time for a delicious lunch. Vehicle return to Cerocahui with stops at some of the most beautiful lookouts in the Canyon area. The trip includes all camping equipment, all meals, transportation of up to 10 pounds of personal gear per person, campsite on the trail and tour/transfer back to Cerocahui. Optionally, clients may remain in Urique or stay an extra night there at their expense and still have a transfer back to Cerocahui. Not included: Accommodations before and after the trip, tips, items of a personal nature, sleeping bag, transportation to and from Paraiso del Oso prior to and after the trek.
