Road Log
Temoris to Chinipas

The dirt road from Temoris to Chinipas is well traveled but descends steeply and may be heavily rutted, especially after heavy rains. The Rio Chinipas has no high-water crossings although Motorcycles may be walked across a suspension foot bridge above town. We made the trip in two and a half hours on ATVs moving at a moderate pace. A truck or SUV would take about an hour longer. Chinipas is a moderate size pueblo alongside a river of the same name. It was once the center of the Jesuit mission movement in the region. In the past it had a water powered flour mill and mills for ore from the mines at Palmarejo. Two steam locomotives decorate the towns plazas. These locomotives were made in England, disassembled shipped across the ocean, and eventually made their way to Chinipas on the backs of mules with no one piece weighing more than 100 kilograms (220 pounds). Chinipas has two very basic hotels, several restaurants, and gasoline available from 55 gallon drums in a store in front of the Hotel Cetenario.
